Common scenarios

Five reasons homeowners reach for the phone

Most people searching for a residential locksmith in Calgary find themselves in one of these situations:

  • Locked out of the house. Keys left inside, the deadbolt latched, or a child engaged the lock.
  • Just moved into a new home. Previous owners, past tenants, contractors, and neighbours may still hold copies of the old keys.
  • Worn or malfunctioning lock. The key sticks, the deadbolt won't throw fully, or the latch no longer catches.
  • Upgrading after a life change. A roommate moved out, a renovation finished, or you want stronger hardware on exterior doors.
  • Lost or stolen keys. Rekeying neutralizes every missing copy instantly.

Core services

What Drew handles for Calgary homes

Lockout entry (non-destructive). Your door and frame stay intact. Pick-and-decode techniques authorized under Criminal Code s.351 and s.353 keep your existing key working once you're back inside.

Lock rekeying. Changes the internal pin configuration of your existing locks. Old keys stop working; you receive new ones. All major brands (Schlage, Yale, Kwikset, Weiser).

Lock replacement and installation. Grade 1, 2, and 3 deadbolts and knob sets supplied and installed.

Lock repair. Sticky deadbolts, misaligned strike plates, loose handles, frozen cylinders. A 20-minute adjustment often restores full function.

Key duplication. Precise spares cut on site for standard and high-security keyways. More on key cutting.

Rekey vs replace

Which option fits your situation

Choose rekeying when:

  • The lock body operates smoothly and the bolt extends fully.
  • You want to void old keys (after moving in, losing a key, or changing access).
  • The existing hardware matches your security grade requirements.
  • Budget matters; rekeying typically costs 40 to 60 percent less than replacement.

Choose replacement when:

  • The cylinder feels gritty, loose, or fails to turn consistently.
  • The hardware shows visible corrosion, cracking, or physical damage.
  • You want to upgrade from Grade 3 to Grade 1 or Grade 2.
  • The existing lock uses a discontinued keyway that limits future duplication.

Drew inspects on arrival and explains both options with the price difference. You decide. There's never pressure to replace hardware that still performs.

Why licensed matters

Three risks a licensed locksmith eliminates

Alberta regulates locksmith services under the Security Services and Investigators Act. A provincial licence confirms the locksmith passed a criminal background check, meets training standards, and operates within the legal framework that protects homeowners.

Drew holds Provincial Locksmith Licence B001472, which authorizes non-destructive entry under Criminal Code s.351 and s.353. Alberta Lock also carries $5,000,000 in general aggregate liability insurance through Tokio Marine Canada Ltd..

An unlicensed individual working on your locks creates three risks: no regulatory accountability, no insurance to cover property damage, and potential Criminal Code issues around possession of lock-picking tools. Verifying a licence number takes 30 seconds and eliminates all three.

Worked with Drew to rekey our new-to-us home, ran into some trouble with a bad cylinder and despite a small wait, he managed to get everything sorted out and in clean working order. I would vouch for him and recommend him to others for his transparent pricing and commendable workmanship. Thanks for taking care of our family Drew!

Called Drew late afternoon and he was able to come over on his way home to have a look at fixing the mechanism on my antique door handle assembly. Drew was not familiar with the style of the handle but through troubleshooting and persistence, he was able to resolve the issue saving me several hundreds of dollars in a new handle mechanism. Works great now. I would definitely call them again and recommend his services to family and friends.

A silly whoops, left the keys in the car. But this beauty of a man came in decent time, even when delayed he called us to let us know. When he arrived it couldn't have taken more than five minutes. Absolutely no damage to the car, and he was polite the whole time. Take it from a girl who's used to scams and shady people, if you're panicking and don't know what to do, use this company. Any car locksmith is expensive, but this one is reasonable. Again, thank you.

I highly recommend Alberta Lock! Drew was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. All the other places I called expected me to be an expert on security and locks. They gave me so much overwhelming information and asked me a lot of questions. But when I called Drew and explained what I was looking for, he guided me to the right solutions really quickly and easily. He was available when we needed him, provided updates on arrival time and throughout the job, and got the work done quickly and with great quality. Drew was also very polite and professional, and I would definitely hire him again!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you unlock my door without damaging it?
Yes. Alberta Lock specializes in non-destructive lockout entry. Drew MacIVER uses pick-and-decode methods authorized under Criminal Code s.351 and s.353. Your door, frame, and lock remain intact, and the lock continues to work with your existing key.
How quickly can you get to my house?
Response times depend on location and current schedule. For Calgary proper (NW, NE, SW, SE), arrival typically falls within 20 to 45 minutes during regular hours. Drew provides an estimated arrival time when you call.
Should I rekey or replace my locks after moving in?
Rekeying handles the most common concern (unknown key holders) at a lower cost. If the existing locks operate smoothly and meet your security expectations, rekeying saves 40 to 60 percent compared to full replacement. Drew inspects the hardware on arrival and recommends the most practical option.
What lock brands do you work with?
Alberta Lock services and installs Schlage, Yale, Kwikset, Weiser, and most other residential lock brands available in Canada. If you have a less common brand, mention the make and model when you call so Drew can confirm parts availability.
Are you licensed and insured?
Alberta Lock Inc. holds Provincial Locksmith Licence B001472, issued under Alberta's Security Services and Investigators Act. The company carries $5 million in general aggregate liability insurance through Tokio Marine Canada Ltd. Drew MacIVER provides licence and insurance verification on request.
Do you charge extra for evenings or weekends?
After-hours calls may carry a surcharge. Drew quotes the total price, including any surcharge, over the phone before dispatching. You always know the cost before committing.
Do you serve areas outside Calgary?
Yes. Alberta Lock regularly serves Airdrie, Cochrane, and Okotoks. Travel surcharges for communities outside Calgary city limits are quoted upfront during the initial phone call.
