The owner-operator

Drew MacIVER started Alberta Lock to fix what was broken about the trade.

Alberta Lock Inc. (doing business as Alberta Lock) is a licensed, insured, and owner-operated locksmith business serving Calgary, Airdrie, Cochrane, and Okotoks. Drew founded the company in 2021 and runs every job personally.

He launched it after watching the Calgary market fill up with lead-generation websites, call centres, and dispatchers who had never cut a key in their lives. These operations collect your call, mark up the price, and send out whoever happens to be available.

Alberta Lock is the opposite: one licensed locksmith who shows up, does the work, and stands behind it. No subcontractors. No dispatched technicians. The Alberta Corporate Registry lists Drew MacIVER as the agent for service. Drew handles everything else.

What "licensed" actually means

Two laws govern who can legally pick your lock in Calgary.

A locksmith licence is not a marketing badge. It is a legal authorization that distinguishes a vetted tradesperson from someone carrying tools the Criminal Code restricts.

Provincial

Security Services and Investigators Act

Alberta regulates locksmiths through Alberta Public Safety and Emergency Services. To hold a valid licence, an individual must pass a background check, meet training requirements, and renew on schedule. The licence confirms the holder has been vetted by the province and authorized to perform locksmith services legally.

Many operators advertising in Calgary do not hold this licence. Some operate under business registrations that carry no regulatory oversight at all.

Alberta Lock holds licence B001472

Valid through January 27, 2027. Drew carries the card on every call.

Federal

Criminal Code of Canada, s.351 & s.353

Section 351 makes it an offence to possess break-in instruments without lawful excuse. Section 353 addresses the selling, purchasing, and possession of automobile master keys.

Licensed locksmiths hold lawful authorization to carry and use these tools. Unlicensed operators carrying the same equipment face potential criminal liability, and hiring them puts you in an unclear legal position.

Drew carries his licence on every call

Ask to see it on-site. If a locksmith can't show one, walk away.

Insurance, in plain English

$5,000,000 in liability coverage on every call.

Alberta Lock Inc. carries commercial general liability insurance through Tokio Marine Canada Ltd., brokered by Zensurance Brokers Inc. (Policy ZAT29863). The policy covers property damage and third-party claims that could arise during a service call.

Property managers and strata corporations can request a certificate of insurance directly from Drew before any work begins.

Owner-operated, not a call centre

The dispatch model dominates search results. Alberta Lock doesn't play that game.

The lead-gen and call-centre model looks legitimate online but functions as a broker layer. Alberta Lock competes by doing the actual work and letting verifiable credentials speak for themselves.

Dispatch model

Brokered call, unknown technician

  • Whoever is closest gets sent out
  • Often unlicensed sub-contracted labour

Worked with Drew to rekey our new-to-us home, ran into some trouble with a bad cylinder and despite a small wait, he managed to get everything sorted out and in clean working order. I would vouch for him and recommend him to others for his transparent pricing and commendable workmanship. Thanks for taking care of our family Drew!

Called Drew late afternoon and he was able to come over on his way home to have a look at fixing the mechanism on my antique door handle assembly. Drew was not familiar with the style of the handle but through troubleshooting and persistence, he was able to resolve the issue saving me several hundreds of dollars in a new handle mechanism. Works great now. I would definitely call them again and recommend his services to family and friends.

I would highly recommend this company. Professional, efficient, and excellent customer service. Drew even vacuumed my front mat afterwards and cleaned up after the job was done!

A silly whoops, left the keys in the car. But this beauty of a man came in decent time, even when delayed he called us to let us know. When he arrived it couldn't have taken more than five minutes. Absolutely no damage to the car, and he was polite the whole time. Take it from a girl who's used to scams and shady people, if you're panicking and don't know what to do, use this company. Any car locksmith is expensive, but this one is reasonable. Again, thank you.

I highly recommend Alberta Lock! Drew was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. All the other places I called expected me to be an expert on security and locks. They gave me so much overwhelming information and asked me a lot of questions. But when I called Drew and explained what I was looking for, he guided me to the right solutions really quickly and easily. He was available when we needed him, provided updates on arrival time and throughout the job, and got the work done quickly and with great quality. Drew was also very polite and professional, and I would definitely hire him again!
